Quilt Mysteries - Do you or don't you?

**UPDATE: Winner has been selected.**

Bonnie K. Hunter's 'Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll Mystery!' is scheduled to make its debut one week from today on November 19. I am anticipating the first clue and have selected fabrics: chocolate, moss, tan, white and pumpkin. Kind of an autumn look, I suppose. I happened to have a lot of these available and no plans for them...perfect for this mystery it seems.

Bonnie's fabrics are green, brown, pink, red and neutral and mine are
green, brown, tan, pumpkin and neutral.
Brown = brown; Green = green; Pink = tan; Red = pumpkin; Neutral = neutral

This time I will watch it evolve before I dive in. Primarily because I will be at work on Friday, November 19.

So, have you ever participated in a mystery?

If you have, did you enjoy it? What was it like for you? What mystery was it? Will you do it again?

If you have not, is it too much to 'give in' to the process? Perhaps since you don't know what the fabric placement is, you find it difficult to choose fabrics?

I have to say - before I did a Quiltville mystery I would anguish over fabrics. Giving in to the mystery process has been freeing for me and allowed me to enjoy sewing even more than I did before.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you like mysteries for a chance to win the current issue of American Patchwork & Quilting.

For a second chance to win the magazine follow this blog and leave a second comment. If you're already a follower just leave a second comment and let me know.

I will select one winner on November 27!

Good luck in the giveaway. If you're joining the mystery I hope you love what you sew!

~~Lisa

P.S. ~ If I draw your name and you have commented you already have the magazine I will send you something else (maybe a couple of FQs?) and re-draw for the magazine. Sound good?

  1. I have never participated in a myster quilt, but would love to. I keep hoping I will catch up with everthing else so I can dedicate my time. Your fabric choices are lovely.

  2. As a newbie, I've not done one. And somehow I don't think I'd be interested to invest time into a project without knowing what I were making and if I'd like it. But that's just me...

  3. I have never really done a mystery quilt. I like surprises but for some reason don't really want to be surprised about a quilt. hmm...not saying I would never do one. Just not yet?

  5. I love mystery quilts. I have participated in 3 of Bonnie Hunter's mysteries. I did Orange Crush, Old Tobacco Road and Double Delight. I have clues printed out and fabric set aside for her Christmas mystery. I'm still choosing my fabrics for the upcoming mystery.

  6. I've participated in a few of Bonnie's and plan to do the others (way late now, still need to do Tobacco Road and Double Delight). I also have participated in a couple of others. I enjoy the mystery itself and doing the quilting with others and am excited to take part in this new one.

  7. I've never done a mystery quilt that I didn't have an idea of what it was going to be first - or at least what it could be. I may follow along with this one and see what it's like - although I don't have time to sew along right now. Sounds interesting!

  8. I have done a few mysteries and love anticipating the next clue as I sew along. That magazine would fit into my collection nicely! Please leave a message on my blog if you pick my name out of the hat.

  9. i have done guild mysteries,an AQS mystery and an on line mystery with varying degrees of satisfaction and a millennium mystery with my sewing group. That is the only one that is finished. I have followed Bonnie's blog for a long time and love all her quilts and her eye for color so decided to jump in and rid myself of some stash in a fun way. i have never followed along with an online group before. This is a fun neew aspect.

  10. Lisa, the first mystery I did was Bonnie's Carolina Crossroads. I did it in red, blacks and whites and it turned out just gorgeous. I gave it to my brother and his new bride and renamed it Canadian Crossroads as they were at a huge Crossroad in their lives. They love it, thanks to Bonnie.

  11. Hi Lisa, thanks for telling us about your blog and giveaway on Quiltvillechat. I have done mysteries with my quilt guild (many years ago), and more recently I have done Bonnie Hunter's Double Delight and Carolina Christmas, getting ready to do Roll, Roll Cotton Boll. I agree with your comments about how hard it can be to select fabrics when you don't know what the pattern looks like or how it will turn out. The first mysteries I did with my quilt guild turned out less than what I hoped for, because I was just not a good fabric picker! I will say that Bonnie Hunter's mysteries have been much more satisfactory because of the variety of fabrics involved, scrappy looks are much more forgiving I think. I have also learned a lot about value and contrast, and being aware of that during fabric selection has produced a much better outcome. I have been so inspired by some of the quilters during previous Quiltville mysteries that I am going to do RRCB with a black background. Talk about out of my comfort zone! But the ones people posted during previous mysteries were so beautiful I just have to try. I would love to win your giveaway, thanks for offering it to us!

  13. I love mysteries but.... I will not be doing this one of Bonnies. I will be gone for 3 weeks and have lots of irons in the fire until after the New Year. Still might do it later, but at that point it will no longer be a mystery. Saw your posting on the quiltville chat.

  14. I did Bonnie's Double Delight mystery and had my husband print the clues for me at each step, because I did not want to see the steps before I had completed mine. So it really was a fun mystery. Don't worry about keeping up, just have fun with the process. If you don't want to see the blocks others have done, get someone else to save the pfd or print out the clue. Helen

  15. I started Bonnie's Mystery Christmas Lights from Quiltmaker magazine but haven't finished it yet. I've also do a couple other mysteries from some other sites and enjoyed participating in them. I won't be able to do the mystery coming up but will be printing out the steps and watching every one's progress along the way.Sandi in NY

  17. Lisa:
I love doing mystery quilts. I plan on doing Bonnie's also. On mystery quilts, however, I never use my very favorite fabrics. I use my older fabrics in case the result is disappointing.

  18. I did Bonnie's mystery last year, but can't get my seams to match. : ( I need to sew the blocks together and finish it. Can't wait to start this one.

  19. I have done two mystery classes and like the results, but I have done others that I do not like.
I have loved the finish quilts of Bonnies mysteries but never done one before. I am joining in on this one!!! And I'm totally excited!! I plan on using the same colors as she is.

PS, I have the magazine already.

  20. I found your blog on one of the emails posted to Quiltville's chat group, and I'm looking forward to going through your posts.

I have only done one mystery, but started to do Double Delight when it was first posted, but haven't finished it. I realized that I had made all of the neutral triangles the same!

I started out having a hard time with making anything scrappy, but I'm much better now. Going with mysteries is difficult for me, though, as far as choosing the colors, because I don't know where the emphasis will be...and I don't have someone in mind at the time I'm picking.

This time, with the Roll Roll Cotton Boll project, I'm trying to keep in mind a specific room and choose colors accordingly, as well as going through a stash of scraps that were donated to me. I'm getting my scraps sorted and organized due to this project, though, and that is amazing in and of itself!

I'd love to be entered into the drawing for the American Patchwork magazine!

  21. I have never done a mystery. I am wanting to do the Quiltvilles one...but I am nervous about it. Might as well dive in I guess. I didn't really like the colors she chose, but don't know how to go about changing them...so I guess I'll try to use some similar.

  22. I have never finished a mystery. I have started a couple and didn't like how they were going, so stopped. I think it is a lot of fabric and time to invest in something you don't know if you will like.
Thanks for adding my QA to your sidebar - you'll notice I chose not to do it as a mystery!♥

  23. Well, I really enjoy mistery quilts, it sounds familiar to me, because my teacher only asks us to bring a certain piece of fabric and then when we get to the class, then we make the technique, it's really funny, because you never know what's next and what's she going to bring to us, nah, she isn't meanie, she's a sweetheart <3, it's really funny

  24. I have never done a mystery quilt. Several of my friends have and said they didn't like how their quilt turned out as they would have picked different colors if they had known what they were making. Another friend made one and hers turned out wonderful so one day I will try one (after I get my pile of projects down a bit!) Thanks for the chance towin. I already get this magazine and it is one subscription I renew all the time.

  25. I haven't subscribed to a quilt magazine for quite awhile, so winning an issue would be fun.
I've never done a mystery but I may be ready to jump in. I know more about value now so picking the fabrics won't be so daunting. I like the idea of an unknown pattern developing as I work.
    Thanks very much.
