Tumbler Quilt

Since my last post I was assigned to a case for jury duty so my days are partly at my regular, full time job and afternoons are spent in court. I had not ever served before, and I don't mind doing my civic duty. It does make for full days, though, since in addition to working in the mornings I am also taking an advanced patchwork class Tuesday evenings.

Last week in class we discussed traditional scrap quilts and one patch designs: for example, the tumbler, the hexagon and the applecore. It was great to make the time to focus on patchwork and sleep can just wait, right? A bonus is now I have "homework" for class next Tuesday and am enjoying that excuse to be in the sewing loft more than usual..what a lovely mess, huh? All of my early reproduction fabrics are being neatly trimmed into tumbler shapes using a plexiglass template and a rotary cutter, and the stacks are getting taller in short order. It'll probably be a top before St. Valentine's Day and I can't wait to see a sampling of my mid to late 1800's fabrics in one top!

Fabulous Free Finds:
♦ In my last post I failed to link to Be Still My Heart, a lovely block which is so versatile for February. If you don't have a lot of reds just throw in pink and burgundy along side them (the reds matching then becomes less conspicuous for those who like a more homogeneous color scheme) or even go completely scrappy. It will all look good...but then again, I love super scrappy! It's a great pattern for a honeybun, though measurements will need to be adjusted if you go that route. I can see this block with a thin background border and then alternating with a checkerboard block. That would be a great project for a honeybun. If you have honeybuns laying around, be sure to look here for ideas...there are several honeybun recipes!
♦ Ms. Brackman's Checkered Past is a free pattern - simply lovely. With precuts it will make up quickly. Have you seen the new 1862 Battle Hymn line? I just adore the cotton boll print in that line (and the tiny florals, and the wavy stripes, and...). I am on the lookout for these fabrics in my local quilt shop. Maybe I will see you there!

Are You Ready for Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day is nearing, so it's time to store the wreath/pine tree/green and red quilts and bring out the red and white classics, the pink and white quilts, or the heart quilts. What? Not a single quilt for the occasion? Me neither. Mine will be a red and white double nine patch. It could have hearts appliqued in the open spaces, but I think I will opt to showcase quilting in the open spaces instead.

What's New in 2012?

Hopefully 2012 is off to a great start for you! It is for me (aside from a doozie of a cold), but it is difficult to say goodbye to some quilty fun I had in 2011. Firstly, Barbara Brackman's Saturday morning posts including history and blocks for her Civil War Commemorative Quilt (available through June 2012). Nancy Rink offered Ode to the Blue and Grey. I love the Beyond the Cherry Trees Album Quilt offered by Sentimental Stitches, Clutch is a smart little dog to have claimed that quilt for his own. With a name like Henrietta Whiskers, how can you resist? Of course, the tail end of 2011 held the unveiling of eight steps on each Friday morning when Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville posted clues to her latest mystery quilt, (spoiler alert!) Orca Bay (<-- click the link to see the 'solution'). Bonnie's Cheddar Bow Ties will have to carry us through to the next mystery quilt.

In San Luis Obispo County there is legislation pending (it will be considered this week!) to ban single-use bags in stores (if it's passed, no more "paper or plastic?"). Consequently I have spent quite a bit of time lately whipping up totes. Of course, I had intended to make them up months ago, but quilts and other fun things came to the forefront. Not anymore! Now I have a collection of totes waiting by the door to carry whatever I need. I even made smaller bags lined with Insul~Bright for frozen/cold items.

It's still early in the year and so many new blocks of the month have surfaced already. Here are a few I will keep my eye on (in alphabetical order). These are each generously offered by the designer for no fee (some for a limited time, for example free for thirty days, then for a fee).

Farewell 2011, Hello 2012

December came and went so quickly. Less time on the computer has been fruitful in many ways, but no post in December? During December, I prepared for festivities and worked, and then had two weeks off during which I... attended the play A Baby King,

baked ginger cookies and made caramel corn with peanuts,

worked on projects, I was tempted to indulge in Bonnie Hunter's mystery and start a new sawtooth star project after seeing this video on the Quilt in a Day site. Fun!

then I baked more, you see, my dear husband, Mr. IQ, is not one to make chocolate disappear. However, he's pretty good at making cookies disappear...so I chopped up the candy bars (all of them!) and added them to a sweet dough (try this recipe) and made bar cookies. The texture is similar to a brownie when baked in a 10x18 pan for 25 minutes. Mmmm.

decorated a gingerbread house in a timed contest. We had teams, my niece, my brother-in-law and I decorated the one on the left. The one on the right was decorated by my mom, Mr. IQ and my nephew. They won the contest! They only finished the front, but the judge liked the 'simplicity' of it. It's okay, the losers got brownies. I am over it, really...it was a lot of fun!

Watched lots of football and prepared for the NFL fantasy football playoffs...we are in week 17 now and I am playing another team for the championship. Wish me luck!

...and then I cleaned out the sewing loft and some closets (certainly not glamorous, but I was productive during my time away from the computer)...still working on the sewing loft and I hope to have a little giveaway soon right here to celebrate the 'refreshed' sewing loft.

Happy Thanksgiving

This week I have time off work to rest and recharge.
I have been cooking . . .

Stitching . . .these blocks will make a triple irish chain variation. This pattern sews up quickly and finally I cut into an April Cornell jelly roll that has been on my shelf for two years. Time flies, doesn't it?!

Cleaning . . . well, actually, more like visiting antique malls . . . and Saturday I spotted a familiar little black box with two latches and a handle on top. Do you know the description? This is what I brought home, and I have been cleaning it . . . does that count as cleaning?! This is a Singer Featherweight sewing machine from September 1945. It's in mint condition, glossy and bright (can you see the reflection in the finish?) and I have been enjoying getting her ship shape so I can put her back into service. It's an honor to own a Featherweight and believe me, she will be treated well.

A New Mystery Begins

Today Bonnie K. Hunter announced some details of the upcoming mystery quilt on her Quiltville blog. The photo that inspired her colors is gorgeous, I may take cues from it as well and change from the colors she used slightly (depends on what I have on hand!).
The size of the resulting quilt is smaller than her typical size, but she warns "I’ll tell you right up front that I do intense piecing…..lots of pieces, many of them small. This is a labor intensive quilt. One WORTH the piecing!". So, a little tune-up to my sewing machine and space are in order before I sew this mystery.

Happy Haunting!

My favorite Halloween costume ever was made by my artistic aunt. When I was 10 years old I went trick-or-treating as a Band-Aid box. It was a great costume: warm and gave people a laugh. Just keep in mind the little one wearing it needs space to walk, so a cut-out in back of the legs from the knees down would be good. I still remember the feeling of my legs hitting the back of the costume trying to keep up with my cousins...ouch, my aching neck! It was worth it, though, that delightful costume made for a great time.

October is in Full Swing...

I love all things Fall: grapes, apples, leaves, pumpkins, and a little warm beverage. Around these parts our neighbors are harvesting their grapes, this is wine country! This Fall we have had fog, along with cool, clear nights and even unseasonably warm temperatures.

What is worth mentioning: an upcoming quilt mystery by Bonnie K. Hunter. A sample of past Bonnie mysteries are available here. I believe the fabric requirements will be posted on her Quiltville blog on November 1 and the first clue will be posted on November 18. If you're not sure what to do with all of your scraps ~ this is a great way to put them to use! Warning: Bonnie makes large quilts (typically about queen-sized or larger). If desired, make one-half the number of units called for and fill in where needed once the end result is more clear. That way you will have a smaller quilt and still participate in the mystery.

My favorite free patterns are:
*Timeless Treasures features Christmas Memories - this would be great with your favorite redwork or with the convenience panel as shown. Also, there is another pattern for a Kindle cover!
*P&B Textiles has a nice pattern called Gray Matters.
*Quilting Treasures offers the Autumn Harvest pattern by Possibilities, it's lovely.
*McCall's Quilting always has many free patterns, and this time the Lodge Getaway caught my eye. Based on the traditional shoe fly block, this one is a timeless classic.
*Maywood Studio's Wyoming Star - still seeing stars and so many possibilites with this pattern.

Arrival of Autumn

On September 23 Autumn arrived in the Northern hemisphere. It's my favorite time of year! I'd love to take the camera on a lazy tour of the county and shoot some old barns, pumpkins, grape leaves turning shades of persimmon into crimson shouting the arrival of autumn. But as the days have grown shorter, lately my time at work has increased ~ my days are longer! However, I have been able to enjoy the rewards of that hard work and even been able to teach a class in addition to my day job. For that I am grateful (tired, and grateful!).

To mark Fall's arrival here are some lovely Fall-themed patterns:

Mennonite Quilt Center, marking, and stars

Yesterday Mr. IQ and I took a quick trip to California's Central Valley so he could attend an NFL fantasy football draft. Meawhile, I visited the Mennonite Quilt Center in Reedley, California. I had not been before and was not sure what to expect. There was no agenda, I had nothing in mind except the time on my hands ought to be spent well. Imagine my delight when I walked in and was greeted by Mary, the manager, and she graciously permitted me to take photos and then invited me to see a quilt show by their featured artist, Pat Robertson. "We have go upstairs", she said, "let me know when you're ready."

About thirty minutes later I said I was ready but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. Three ladies and I exited the comfortable air-conditioned shop and made the arduous climb up the staircase. When we entered the room we were awestruck and were literally speechless. Then I said, "wow". That was all that came out. There were no words, just the taking in of the sheer volume of space which showcased the quilts coupled with the delectable quilts we saw. Gorgeous. Striking. Spectacular.

There is something of a little miracle in that moment when you're taking in all of the colors, shapes, the minute stitches, the negative space, all the beauty of another artist's work. I began to look at each one. Which one pulls you in first? Do you remember? Is it the one you're closest to or do you move across the room to take in the quilt so spectacular it pushes its way to first in line? These were all lovely. She used applique, paper piecing, machine piecing and perhaps some hand piecing as well. Some of the quilts were machine quilted, others all by hand and still others used both methods. There was one which resembles a persian rug, a study in reds, a spiky one, dresden plate with a petal askew called He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not, gorgeous appliqued flowers and vines amid pieced patchwork and actual woven baskets, and more. Our friendly guide announced that Pat does all of the steps in making the quilts herself, she works outside the home in addition to teaching at the center and creating all of this beauty. Wow, I am still captivated.

The Quilt Center features an artist every year following the quilt auction, when they have no auction quilts to display. Each April the Mennonite Quilt Center holds a quilt auction at Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, California. This year it was held April 1 and 2. The quilts sold are still listed here for your viewing. The auction is a benefit for the Mennonite Central Committee. More information is available at this site.

If you can get to Reedley, California make the trip if only to see the Mennonite Quilt Center. I was pleased to meet the many volunteers who work there and a few kind ladies, including Debbie, who began quilting in January and said she didn't remember to bring her phone to take photos. Of course I offered to provide a link to the photo slideshow as I usually take quite a few pictures when I bring the camera along. Reedley even has a 'quilt walk'. Traditional blocks are featured in mosaic tiles in front of several downtown businesses, including the Mennonite Quilt Center. I stopped to photograph a few of them, but in the 111 degree fahrenheit heat I decided to pack up the camera after the two block stroll, leaving about half of them for my next visit.

Bow Tie blocks from civil war reproduction scraps

This week I worked on a few bow ties (26 so far and counting) and some English paper piecing (the triangle hexagons). A recent finish is this Three Bean Salad quilt (that's what the folks at Cotton Pickin Designs called it - it's their design!).

Hopefully you've had better luck than I when it comes to finding the PBS documentary Why Quilts Matter: History, Art & Politics will be available to you locally. I may have to simply buy the DVDs in order to ensure I can see all nine episodes as I have not yet been able to find the air date and time, or even whether it will air on my carrier, despite numerous attempts.

Now You See It, Now You Don't?

Many quilters are looking for the best way to mark quilts. Clearly the key is the marks stay when you want them to (for example signatures and quilt labels) and it disappears when it's supposed to, generally when marking quilting lines. There has been buzz in quilt blogs and chat groups about Pilot FriXion(R) pens, and whether they 'really' disappear. It seems they disappear when pressed (heat over 140 degrees) and sometimes re-appear when temperatures drop (put your work in the freezer and the marks come back). Though I read in one case where the quilt had been washed before being in the freezer and the marks did not reappear. Have you tried this pen yet? What is your opinon? Would you use a FriXion pen on an heirloom quilt? A utility quilt?

Recently I marked a piece of muslin with Crayola(R) washable pens and another with Crayola washable crayon. These are my 'disappearing' markers of choice.

Hypothesis:

I have used Crayola washable crayons with great success for several years, so I fully expected both the markers and the crayons would come out after one wash.

The experiment:

On two pieces of muslin, I wrote the names of the colors with a regular black Sharpie(R) fine point permanent pen (the one that says 'Not for letter writing or cloth'). This would test whether the Sharpie bled and how well it held up in the wash. Secondly, I labeled the top with IDenti(R)-pen ('Crayons' and 'Pens') to compare it with the Sharpie. Next to the name of the pen or crayon I crosshatched marks and then drew a line out to the right. They were washed in a frontloading washer in cold water, gentle cycle with mild detergent. I did not put them in the dryer and no prewash/spot treatment was used.

NOTE: On the box of Crayola washable pens it states: For Best Results: Crayola Washable Markers wash from skin and most washable children's clothing. Wash promptly in hot wash cycle. Do not use prewash or chlorine bleach. Repeat laundering may be required.

Considerations:

As noted above, I used cold water and the company suggests hot for best results. Additionally, in the hopes of recreating a true quilting scenario where marks may remain for several weeks before washing, I waited three days before laundering thereby not following the suggested guideline 'wash promptly' for best results. Finally, I washed only once and it states repeat laundering may be required.

Results:

As you can see in the photo below, the pens washed out quite well. Even held up against the light there is no trace of color in any of the eight areas where washable marker was crosshatched the line area. Alternately, in the washable crayon areas all held traces of crayon. This was quite surprising as I have used the washable crayons reliably (without testing first though of course that is recommended) and they have come out without fail from four quilts washed as in the experiment (front loading washer, cold, mild detergent, gentle cycle).

Recently I finished the Three Bean Salad quilt and used purple Crayola washable crayon* to mark the quilting lines. It washed out! *Please test first and use at your own risk!

Conclusion: I will continue to use Crayola washable crayons and markers for marking. They are readily available, price is good -- around here they cost less than $2 per box during back to school and ohh the variety of colors with 8 marking pens and 24 crayons! On lighter fabrics I will use the washable pen or painters tape for straight line quilting.

Arroyo Grande Centennial Quilt Show

Yesterday I had the pleasure of viewing quilts by artists of the Central Coast Quilt Guild exhibited in honor of the City of Arroyo Grande's 100th birthday. Here is a link to a few pictures. Apologies for the photo quality and awkward angles. The conditions were less than ideal for photography; it was quite crowded with people and the rows were impressively narrow, to get some shots I nearly backed into a wall of quilts in the neighboring row. I am happy to show you what I was able to capture though, because it's all about the quilts! Hopefully you'll be inspired to attend a local show or sew up something new.

This week the Civil War block is Indiana Puzzle. Curved piecing ~ I have not done curved seams for a few years, so I am pleased there is a little friendly reminder here. Hopefully you have done well with it. Mine is yet to be tackled, and I am looking forward to it. If you have finished all of the blocks you are 63% done (and congratulations)! I am about half way there at 33%, happily flitting between projects. Hmm, I think I will sew one block up, cut one out and leave it for the next time I go into the loft. Kind of like a little temptation to sew the next one up quickly before I get to another project. I will let you know how well that works!

Summer Fun

Lately I have been working on a few projects, finishing the Three Bean Salad quilt, attending swim meets, working a lot (I work at a college and Fall is just around the corner - instructors return from Summer break next week and students will return the following week.) and making class samples for the Autumn Leaves and Quick Trip patterns. Since mid-June I have also reflected on my progress toward my 2011 quilting goals.

This year it has been a priority to get outside the box and not be the same quilter I was in 2010. I just want to grow as a quilter, that's all...nothing wrong with the 2010 me, but I thought, 'let me spread my wings a little more'. So, I have sought out new techniques and patterns. So with that in mind I have free motion quilted on an actual quilt (not just a bit of muslin!), sketched several original quilt patterns, English paper pieced a pattern I had not done before, improvisationally pieced (so unlike anything I would typically choose -- and that's the point) and learned a new technique for making flying geese in order to keep that commitment. I have not yet done everything I set out to do, but that's the whole idea behind taking stock of my accomplishments and tweaking goals as needed. Did you make quilting goals for 2011? How are you doing?

My favorite freebies of late are:

First, the Market Tote -- to carry your late Summer harvest. If that's not enough to keep you busy, there are two Layer Cake Quilts: the Double Slice Layer Cake Quilt, the quilt top uses only a layer cake (without borders), and the 1 + 2 Easy Quilt pattern which uses the layer cake plus two yards for the quilt top. My favorite freebie accessory to date (yes, ever) is this Sewing Caddy. I use it all the time and I cannot believe I ever sewed without it. It was especially helpful in class, when space is limited. I did not make the pin cushion as I wanted the pocket to be free of encumbrance and available for my rotary cutter. If I were to tweak it, I might consider adding a button hole about half way down one slim pocket to allow my seam ripper to have a 'holster' and be more accessible. As it is I dig for it...but don't mind much.

I have been thinking about the Civil War quilt, saving patterns each week and dreaming of completing them on time...but not keeping up lately. I will get caught up eventually. Also I have been anticipating starting a new irish chain scrappy quilt, so I am collecting blues. How is that for a conundrum....I have such limited time and dreams to sew so many quilts. Such is the puzzle of an inspired quilter, right?!

You Can Make a Quilt in a Day

Yes, you can do it! It took seven hours to make the center of the Quick Trip quilt (I am not the fastest so certainly it can be made more quickly than that). I needed to purchase more fabric for the first border so I have only completed the center so far. Today I finally was able to get to Sew Fun and thankfully Lynn still had the fabric in stock! There is always a bit of anxiety about whether it will still be there by the time I am able to get to the shop. Now I have to add the borders and the top will be complete. Then I will make another one, they're so fast why not?!

What else have I been up to? Autumn Leaves has me captivated. I enjoy the possibilities of color combinations and I have been piecing a lot of them since the Quilt in a Day training ended. I am going to have one great Fall quilt when I get to the bottom of the pile of batiks! Below is a sample of possible groupings for leaves.

I have also been selecting fabrics for a star wallhanging called Wish Upon a Star. I call this 'homework' now that I am preparing to teach ~ sounds better to me than 'putzing around in the sewing loft'. Whatever it is called, it's a lot of fun.

I was fortunate to attend Quilt in a Day's Teacher Certification Training June 21-23. It was wonderful to meet so many kind and talented colleagues and to finally meet El (when I called her Ms. Burns, she said. "Aww, you can call me El.") and the talented folks at Quilt in a Day. As certified teachers, we are now ready to teach Quilt in a Day quick piecing techniques. During our training we covered the Radiant Star and Sassy Stars, flying geese, half square triangles, Day and Night, fusible applique, the Autumn Leaf pattern and more. It was particularly helpful to understand what parts can be confusing to students. I also learned first hand the remarkable detail in the books and patterns. One of the attendees shared with the group that she has a learning disability and the Quilt in a Day patterns are the only ones that make sense to her. I suppose that's because the Quilt in a Day patterns have 16 pages in them and they contain details that others leave out to save valuable space and the bottom line. Love Quilt in a Day patterns! I have to say it was truly a priviledge to have attended and I look forward to the next opportunity to make a trip to San Marcos, California, USA.

Since that time I have been in the sewing loft (when not working as an executive assistant) working on a number of things (Autumn Leaf Table Runner, Sliced Nine Patch, Quick Trip, more autumn leaves...). When I went to a favorite local quilt shop to purchase some fabrics for the Quick Trip quilt I inquired about a need for quilt teachers. Fortunately I was able to make an appointment and am really looking forward to teaching my first Quilt in a Day class (I have taught previously but not any Quilt in a Day patterns). I will teach the Quick Trip quilt, a great one for beginning quilters and seasoned quilters as well. The color selection really holds your interest so it's a good quilt for everyone!

Today I am going to make a quilt top in a day ~ the Quick Trip lap size is what I am working on. I can't wait to see it come together...fabrics are pictured above. Got to get back in the loft, please wish me full bobbins and no seams to rip!

Hexagons and Flag Day Giveaway

Lately I have been sewing English paper pieced hexagons from equilateral triangles in 19th century reproduction fabrics. I worked on them quite a bit while watching television programs about the Civil War over the Memorial Day weekend. If you have not tried English paper piecing, give it a go. It's really simple to do and a great way to use scraps. For example, one 2.5 inch square (say, leftovers from a strip bundle) is the right size for a one inch hexagon (the measurement of one side of the hexagon). It's also keeps you sewing when you're away from your machine or you'd otherwise be waiting (for your medical appointment, your vehicle to be repaired or any number of things). You will be surprised how fast you whip up a little table topper.

So, who wants to try English paper piecing? Comment on this post by Friday, June 17 (a few days beyond Flag Day which is Tuesday, June 14 in the United States) and I will select one winner (okay, maybe two if there are two comments!) sometime Saturday, June 18. Central Coast Quilt Shop Tour passport and ribbons

Tour purchases: sweet florals, neutral tone on tones,
30's and civil war fabrics and a patriotic panel

Last weekend was the Central Coast Quilt Shop Tour - the tenth anniversary. It was my third year to tour. Because it was raining (pouring!) I left my camera in the car and dashed into shops. All I have to show is the evidence of the tour: my purchases, my stamped 'passport' and the ribbons given to each participant (a commemoration of your visit to the shop). The ribbons are sort of a badge to tie on your car antenna. One woman put them all on her glasses but I opted to tie them to a safety pin and wear it on my blouse. Those who visit every shop (evidenced by a completed passport) turn in the passport for a chance to win generous prizes. Folks come from quite a distance to participate. You should check it out in 2012!

Now I look forward to the Templeton Outdoor Quilt Show which is June 18 from 9:00am to 4:00pm in downtown Templeton, CA, USA. I just love that show, there is just something about all the quilts hung outside, swaying in the breeze. Some of the quilts are available for purchase. I will update you on that show...or you could go and see it in person!

Recently I made a little needlebook and small pinkeep for a dear friend. She loved it. Thought you might like to see it too! It's nice to have pretty little sewing notions, don't you think?

Lastly, I look forward to my trip to Quilt in a Day to attend the teacher's training certification seminar later this month. Sooo excited. I signed up last year and it's just amazing that it's time to go in just a couple of weeks. Darlene at Sew Cal Gal attended the training earlier this year and she blogged about it here. Today Taryn blogged about a lack of inspiration and I truly admire her authenticity. She's surfing the web for pictures in search of inspiration. I have been there too, and once I thought about not sewing for a month. Then I got scared ~ I don't like to make rules about / set limitations on my sewing. It's supposed to be fun and I strive to keep it that way! Her post encouraged me to think on what I have done to overcome a lack of inspiration, what inspires my creativity...and what stifles my creativity.

Stifling: lack of sleep; feeling overwhelmed by too many obligations; stress; same old projects that seem to never get finished; an untidy sewing room.

Inspiring: photos of reproduction and antique quilts (Quilt Index); dresdens; tiny pieces; my little quilt book library; starting a new project; improvisational piecing; changing to a project with different colors; going to quilt shows (Seven Sisters 2011 is April 30-May1); the show and tell part of a guild meeting; Yahoo! groups photos of finished quilts.

Renewing: visit the local library and pour over their books for a few hours (in subjects such as: nature, home decor, architecture, traditional textiles from other cultures, traditional and heritage quilts, state documentation project books); see a movie; spend an afternoon at the park, county fair, beach, lake; see an exhibit; travel (near or far).

In recent weeks I have worked on a few of the Civil War Quilts blocks. I am primarily using red, blue, shirtings, and brown with touches of cheddar and pink. I can't wait to photograph them all together so I am using that as incentive to get completely caught up.

3 Seven Sisters

My favorite block in this group is London Square. Perhaps I will make up more of those for a quilt of all London Square blocks. I'm thinking about that, I have a lot of irons in the fire. I will certainly keep you posted.

Lately I have made a few little pincushions. Always great for a quick finish and so useful. I like the tiny ones to keep with handwork so I have somewhere to put my needle in between stitching. Of course, it's always a good idea to know where you stuck it. With our curious little dogs around, it's extra important!

Instead of sewing Sunday I went on a road trip with the dogs and Mr. IQ to Cambria. We walked about, saw sweet little stores and enjoyed lovely weather. If you have never visited Cambria, California, USA I highly recommend it! I most of all hoped to go to a favorite shop, Birds of a Feather. I learned she has gone online only and will miss her dear little shop for sure. PKM even blogged about the shop. We were able to visit an antique shop and see a couple of well loved quilts. A grandmother's flower garden (hexagon) quilt above with fussy-cut split star fabrics (above) and a six point star with a little bunny, just in time for Spring!

Holy Smokes!

Have you ever come into fabrics that smell of smoke? Recently 12 gorgeous fat quarter-sized scraps found their way to me sealed in quart-sized zip bags. When I opened the gift to admire the contents I was left with a sore throat after just three or four minutes of unsealing the bag. Whoa ~ strong stuff! Mr. IQ gets migraines from the smell of smoke, so it's not an option to have the smoke-scented fabrics around. What to do?

The good news: How I got rid of the odor:

I sealed them in the zip bags and sprinkled approximately one tablespoon of baking soda in each bag, then filled it with water to cover the tops of the fabrics. I then added a bit of 'odor eliminator' (Febreeze, for example, just unscrewed the top and poured in a bit) and zipped them up, agitated them (turned a few times, gently shook) to be sure the additions circulated around the fabrics and left them overnight. In the morning I opened the bags and poured out the yellow/tan water. I then filled the bags half way with fresh water and added enough white vinegar to cover the tops of the fabrics. In the afternoon I emptied the water/vinegar mixture out and squeezed the excess from the fabrics, then laundered them. The smelled great to me and they passed Mr. IQ's sniff test too.

Give this a try if you need to remove smoke smell from fabrics. Now I have lovely fat quarters to add to a scrap quilt or two.

Did you go see the Infinite Variety exhibit of red and white quilts? I am not nearby, across the nation, actually, so I have enjoyed it through the eyes of others. My intent when visiting various blogs was to understand the scale and implementation of the installation and to see the quilts, of course. My unexpected delight was reading the reactions to and characterizations of the exhibit. To those who visited and shared, *thank you*, it has truly been a pleasure to experience it through your eyes. To those who worked to bring the exhibit to life, you have made so many people joyful in your work. To Ms. Joanna S. Rose, I am grateful for your generosity in sharing your treasures with us all.

If you have photos from the exhibit, you may wish to send them to the American Folk Art Museum as they have requested photos (submit by April 11). See details here.

On another note, a tip: I like to use washable Crayola Crayons for marking quilts. I have not had any color stay behind, but I test each time just in case. If you're looking for a reliable method for marking quilts, give this one a try. Of course, they come in all kinds of colors and if one is not easy to see on a particular fabric, there is sure to be another that is (I am not affiliated with Crayola ~ just passing along a tip that works for me).

Spring is Here

Happy Spring! I have sewn a little wallhanging in honor of the occasion. It began with the floral focus fabric and initially I planned to pair it with a lovely bright pink and yellow with small flowers in a nine patch on point. Once I laid it out I knew the plan needed a little tweak.

These nine patches will find a place in another quilt ~ they didn't seem to suit this one.

...and this is what it evolved into...the darker pink (Pantone's honeysuckle?) and a deep, dark green.

Given that we have had rain since Friday ~ this may be the only Spring I see today!

I have also been working on the Civil War Quilts blocks lately. I have a few blocks to catch up on and yesterday there were a couple of hours to sew. They have each been lovely and some more challenging than expected. I enjoy making them and learning more about piecing and Civil War history as I sew. Once next week's block is released I believe we will be one quarter of the way finished sewing the blocks. Hard to believe, just one block per week and we will have a lovely commemorative quilt.

In Search of Spring

My thoughts and prayers continue to be with our friends in Japan who suffered yesterday's earthquake and tsunami.

With March Madness, Daylight Saving Time and the Spring equinox right around the corner, this morning I went looking for Spring in my fabric collection.

I think I found some.

Today I will start a new project and not feel any guilt for putting a project or two aside while I work on it. It's simple and small ~ I'll make a nine patch on point.

More Civil War Blocks

While sewing these blocks I like to imagine what it must have been like for a young woman to have been sewing blocks to make a quilt in 1861, the year the Civil War began. She most likely hand pieced the blocks in the evening after working all day to keep the household going.

According to many, the sewing machine was invented in the 1840's by Howe and brought to many homes by Singer in the mid-1860's. It seems it was a controversial invention because 'delicate and excitable' women may not have the 'technical ability' to operate the machines. Additionally, it was thought that sewing and other tasks 'occupied the time' of women and if they didn't have the handwork to keep them busy they might spend their time shopping and playing cards. This morning I completed blocks 9 Birds in the Air and 10 Lincoln's Platform. Long ago I embraced the technology of the domestic sewing machine and I used it to make these blocks. Maybe next week's block will be hand pieced to pay homage to our fore-quilters (men and women alike!).

Quilt in One Day?

Have you ever made a quilt in one day? I have not. Well, I have made potholders in one day, and I guess one could consider those quilts.

I am reminded of my first quilt; I don't dabble in things but rather jump in with both feet. You see, my first quilt was king sized! It was Lover's Knot by Eleanor Burns of Quilt in a Day...so I suppose I have made a quilt in a day but it took a couple of months! My second project was a wall hanging (can you blame me?).

How about making a trip around the world in one day? I am tempted to challenge myself with Bonnie K. Hunter's pattern and see what it takes. It seems that with the strip piecing it will make up quickly, but in one day? Think it's possible? Perhaps we'll find out!

The ingredients for this pattern are being assembled, thanks to the sale table at a local fabric shop. Here is a possible grouping with nine fabrics featured in the quilt:

Civil War Blocks

Gorgeous, cold winter day on California's central coast.

Lately I have been playing a bit of catch up. Ms. Brackman issued 9 Birds in the Air this week and I have only completed about half of the blocks yet. Progress was slowed by the irritated nerve in my right arm and the related various appointments and time required for rehabilitation. Well I am now able to get back in the saddle and I have made 7 Log Cabin and 8 Cotton Boll.
I was thrilled to find this fabric in my collection which has a 'cotton boll' feel to it.
I am grateful for these blocks of the week and am enjoying the journey making this quilt to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.

Are you making any special item to commemorate an event?

Speaking of events ~ we had snow in the county yesterday. Of course many have snow right now but on the California coast it's not so common. The authorities even had to close a portion of a highway for nearly an hour. No worries though, I was safely inside a warm quilt shop and today is cold but clear, a gorgeous winter day.

Check Up

Thankfully the doc says my arm is more than 90% well and he lifted my restrictions. {cheers!} Of course physical therapy must continue and I need to consider changes to the workstation along with other recommendations. I am so fortunate this has resolved quickly and endeavor to keep it at bay.

In the meantime I have been visiting fabric stores collecting batiks for a quilt that caught Mr. IQ's eye at Sew Fun last September.

Wait. What?

Yes, he does know what flying geese are (he is my husband after all), but he's been in dozens (hundreds?) of quilt shops, to shows, and I have never heard him say he particularly likes any of the quilts we have seen. Mr. IQ is a football nut. I mean, he truly puts the 'fanatic' in fan: college football, the CFL (Go BC Lions) the NFL draft, the combine. He loves it all and that is where his passion lies. The gridiron.

Restrictions

It's been years since I have been 'on restriction' but that's what I am dealing with now. Limit 'repetitive use of right hand' and no pushing, pulling or lifting over 25 pounds. It's all related to tendonitis and an irritated ulnar nerve. You likely know that the 'funny bone' is not really a bone, but the ulnar nerve. Please don't rest your elbow on a hard surface repetitively when typing or on the telephone for example because that is what is the most likely cause (at least in my case). That said, I am doing well and certainly on the mend.

All the while I have been limiting typing and such, but I cannot help myself from blog hopping or searching for quilty inspiration elsewhere even though I have not been as productive in the sewing loft. My itch to stitch has been satisfied by looking at pictures like these log cabin quilts on Barbara Brackman's blog, this streak of lightning log cabin and I gasped when I saw this barn raising log cabin. Lovely.

Not much sewing going on here lately. I managed to get some of Joanne at Thread Head's blocks sewn...

and to sew several scrappy log cabin blocks with some fabrics left from other projects...

I don't like to be out of commission, but I am afraid it's what the doctor ordered for now. If I comply I will have many more years of pain-free sewing ahead.

Meanwhile I am dreaming of starting this Irish Cabins quilt from American Patchwork and Quilting, April 2006. I am collecting fabrics for it (I can't sew much, but I can plan and collect!). I just fell in love with it when I saw Laurie Simpson's version here.

Previous posts on this blog have identified Thread Head which began last Fall (it's never too late to begin this gorgeous quilt); Civil War Quilts where a weekly block is posted by Barbara Brackman; and The Lone Star quilt along by Lyn Brown.

If there is a shortage of new projects on your list perhaps consider one of these sew alongs (no affiliation):

Ashes of Roses Quilt Along by Ronda. Gorgeous. Love the different colorways. All of them. This quilt uses Inklingo products. I have been meaning to do a project using Inklingo. Hmmm.

Postage Stamp Quilt Along by Rachel. Classic. This would be lovely in any jelly roll you have on hand.

My Tweets by Erin. Saturated. The color and exquisite applique are enough to make your mouth water. Her instructions are detailed and seem to suit all levels.

At this point I am resisting these, though not sure how long I'll be able to maintain this reserved state. There is something for everyone out there. I'd love to have 10 of me sewing on all of my projects at once...well, maybe not. My sewing space is not *that* big.

Winter?

Around these parts it's been 70 degrees on average this week. Yes, we have been experiencing above average temperatures for January to be sure. About a month ago I took the below photo at work while on my way to an event with camera in hand. Clearly, not long ago it was looking quite Fall-like. Just before the winter solstice there was rainfall that had the local meteorologist talking about records, trees falling, mudslides. It was a real mess.

It's all quilting weather to me ~ surely you can relate.

I have been thinking about the Whig's Defeat block and fabric selection. Quilt historians in the Deep South Study group recount block history here. According to my research Whig's Defeat is also known as Grandmother's Engagement Ring, Fanny's Favorite, and Democrat's Fancy. Traditionally I believe red, white and blue were most often used. I have seen lovely versions in pink, green, cheddar and in red, green and cheddar. I am a fan of cheddar, so that's an easy one. I am still working on the other two colors.

This is one stack I have been staring at:

Kona red, Kona papaya, an indigo print and parchment.

Not sure about this red with this indigo. I am going to create

a new stack and stare at it for a bit.

No worries though, while I have been thinking on the Whig's Defeat fabrics I have sewn. Below is a stack of nine patches in Moda's Shangri La (mostly) that will become a couch throw soon.

And there are always these Bonnie Hunter mystery blocks to work on. I have slowly made some progress on the quilt. It's a big one with many pieces. I am enjoying the journey with this quilt...in other words it could be a while. If you're partial to the pattern go now and save the files. It's free on her site for a limited time (June 1, 2011).

And more fabric choices to make. I have the below fabrics for the Joanne Thread Head Quilt Along alternate blocks. I am not sure if I like the plain muslin fabric with the tan and black prints or the shirting below with the small circles. Perhaps a tone on tone like Joanne's? Decisions, decisions! More fabric to think on.

Of course I have been sewing along with Barbara Brackman too. No shortage of projects here. I have sewn the first two and am in progress on the third. It's applique and I am trying a new to me technique described here. Marcia Hohn prefers using freezer paper on the top of the piece to guide her needleturn. I thought 'Hmmm, it's worth a try.' It may not be the best method for pointy stars (?) but I want to try it.

Happy New Year

The new year is upon us. Mr. IQ and I had a quiet dinner out and met some friends for a drink too. I celebrated with a chilled Samuel Adams Winterfest followed by plenty of ice water with a twist of lime. Then we watched lots of festivities on television. It's the first time in many years I have stayed up until the stroke of midnight. Happy New Year!

Traditions ~ what folks do to ring in the new year has held my interest this year. I am amazed at the variety of activities people undertake while ringing in the new year. Of course, it's likely the most popular custom in the United States of America is to make resolutions. There is the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California which began in order to celebrate the orange crop ripening. Some people put coins in food for good fortune, consume blackeyed peas for good luck, eat doughnuts (the ring symbolizes coming full circle). In some cultures rice is lucky while in others cabbage (symbolizing paper currency) is eaten. We actually did have doughnuts. How did you celebrate?

New beginnings ~ did you know of Barbara Brackman's new blog to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the Civil War? I was not aware of this until her post today...hmmm, it appears I have a new project already, and it's only January 1. This adventure sounds like a lot of fun with great learning opportunities. Given the belief that the way you begin the year will color the rest of your year it sounds like a year of relaxation, starting new projects and working on current projects will characterize my 2011. Bring it on!

Building New Skills in 2011

In a Yahoo! group the members have assembled a list of skills to build in 2011. I like the idea of skill building topics for the year. I don't want to be the same quilter in 2011 I was in 2010. I want to grow and strive to fearlessly undertake challenging projects in order to improve. The skill for January is 'y seams'. I don't mind them by machine or by hand, and I am inclined to join in the fun. Are you?

If you are interested in skill building around 'y seams' consider this primer or read through this pattern.

There are inspiring photos posted by Taryn, Kathie, more Kathie, Lori, Marti Mitchell and photos on Ms. Brackman's Material Culture blog with information about a stars quilt study in Oregon and later in Indiana, USA. Here is one I may consider, just the right size! A lovely antique carolina lily and another carolina lily with gorgeous feathers.

There is even a lone star sew along by Lyn Brown beginning in January.

Ringing in the New Year

I create so many quilts in my mind and begin only a small percentage of them, and finish an even smaller percentage of those. Understandably so, since I have a fondness for English paper piecing. On the upside, I have a variety of projects to choose from when I have time to sew. Perhaps I should create smaller projects?!

Additionally, my workspace is small and I think that makes me resistant to getting the tops together, basting and quilting them. Though I do believe I am fortunate to have a space to sew, however congested it is. Miniature quilts are sure cute ~ that is a definite possibility, or maybe quilting as I go.

My space is not too small, it is just small enough that I shy away from assembling blocks and getting the quilt sandwiched and quilted. Anyhow, I resolve to finish two of my works in progress in 2011 and to better organize my space. I have some ideas about reorganizing and we will see how it comes together. Also, I'll make one Whig's Defeat block (inspiration here, possible pattern here) ...and if I love doing that one block I'll make more. Oh, and play with some wool.

I am grateful to have this week off work. Aside from baking and cooking a lot...I have been working on a little something for a friend's baby boy and am still piecing a few for steps 3 and 5 (have not begun step 6 yet either) of Bonnie's Roll Roll Cotton Boll. This mystery has me completely in the dark. According to the most recent mystery clue we will begin block assembly with step 7 which will be released on Friday...and I am looking forward to the possibility of a bit of a reveal too.

If you're feeling a little like a mystery there are a few New Year mysteries going on here, one here, another here, and yet another here. That should keep us busy! Actually I am not sewing a new mystery to start off 2011. Instead I will continue with RRCB, the Thread Head sew along (which I am doing in honor of the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War) and begin on my list of resolutions.

First things first. I did include the fly fabric in my string blocks! I have been sewing along and keeping up (for the most part) with the mystery. I've also been anticipating each clue for the Quiltville mystery, next one comes out early tomorrow morning...and I can't wait!

So in between steps I have been...

Working...and doing a little shopping, baking and wrapping of course!

The charms are a really fun assortment ~ see how Allison sewed them up into a quilt here. These gifts are so inspiring. Thank you ladies.

Beginning. In honor of the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War I have started the Thread Head Quilt Along in civil war fabrics. The blocks are not necessarily from the CW era. I may do a few substitutions. This is a way I have chosen to commemorate it, there are so many ways! Perhaps make a red, green and white quilt? You could sew CW era blocks from scraps or yardage of CW era fabric, use CW fabrics to sew up something that catches your eye, or sew a quilt that somehow connects 2011 to 1861 for you. Maybe a sashed sampler with one block each from the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, and so on?

Uglies ~ What to do?

Of course I have been sewing along with Bonnie K. Hunter's Roll Roll Cotton Boll mystery on the Quiltville site. Currently we're on step three which uses many neutral strips and strings to make string blocks. Bonnie encourages sewists to be daring, to use not only white on white or tone on tones, but to use fabrics with neutral backgrounds and also have some color, and to use ugly fabrics (they'll be cut up small...it's okay!).

So, a thread in the the Yahoo! group chat has turned to the ugliest fabric. My fellow Quiltvillian Quilting Bibliophagist posted a reproduction conversational fabric with flies on it. Impressive...it made me think of this fabric of mine...yes a different fly fabric. Who would have thought...and if there are two fly fabrics there are probably more.

Anyway, here is my ugly fabric that could be incorporated into this quilt.

Look at the detail on those legs and the gray and black abdomens. Gorgeous, no? And like QB I am wondering why I purchased this ~ but I believed they were bees ~ and somehow that would have been better?!

So the thoughts creep in...

Shall I? Really?
Yes...it's only one fat quarter.

But they're one and a quarter inches across the wings...and *whoa* it's really ugly.
Bonnie would add them in. I do mysteries to stretch myself.

This is challenging and not in the way I expected.

Hmmm...what to do??

This runner is two Ozark Maple Leaf blocks, which tessellate when placed together (do you see the leaves in the background fabric as well as the red, green, orange and brown?). Here is a pattern for the block.

I have kept busy since Friday after work trimming, pressing and sewing scraps for the Quiltville mystery 'Roll Roll Cotton Boll!'. When scraps are used it surely takes more time getting them prepared to sew together, but I am resolute on using them up...so I happily process and prepare them for sewing (wash, press, trim, sew, repeat!).

Here are a few of my step one units. They're so scrappy! (using tan instead of pink)

As you can see my quilt will be very scrappy, as prescribed. I am pleased to be able to cut some of my less lovely fabrics into small pieces and get them into a quilt. Some true uglies are here, and some that I thought were just awful are less so when diluted amongst those I like more. As more steps are done, these will be even less noticeable! I think I have enough fabrics gathered to make two of these quilts...and the quilt will be a generous 87"x102" so that's saying something.

Quilt Mysteries - Do you or don't you?

Bonnie K. Hunter's 'Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll Mystery!' is scheduled to make its debut one week from today on November 19. I am anticipating the first clue and have selected fabrics: chocolate, moss, tan, white and pumpkin. Kind of an autumn look, I suppose. I happened to have a lot of these available and no plans for them...perfect for this mystery it seems.

green, brown, tan, pumpkin and neutral.
Brown = brown; Green = green; Pink = tan; Red = pumpkin; Neutral = neutral

This time I will watch it evolve before I dive in. Primarily because I will be at work on Friday, November 19.

'Quilting Through the Ages' Antique Quilt Exhibit

Captivated is a word to describe my complete adoration of antique quilts. I had the pleasure of seeing 'Quilting Through the Ages' at The Santa Ynez Valley Historical Museum on Saturday, October 23. According to the program the exhibit runs through October 31. I am (secretly) thinking of going back so I can gawk at these beauties once again.

The quilts are from the Santa Ynez Valley area and when possible information about the quilts' owners and makers is shared. In some cases photographs of the families accompany the display.

1890 Maple Leaf (restored 2009)

1877 Temperance Quilt

This "T" or Temperance quilt was part of a larger quilt and when the quiltmaker passed it was divided into smaller pieces in her memory.

Hexagon Quilt

An adjacent exhibit displayed vignettes of clothing, quilts and other articles of interest. These are contained in cases so there is reflection in the photographs (sorry about the reflection).

This is the dress on the left in the above photo. The accompanying information card reads, "This is a brown two piece dress. Skirt has layers in both the front and back, which was the norm, and was accented with the bustle. This dress would be worn by a middle class matron both at home and for outings. She would have dressed it up with vintage handmade lace..."

The accompanying information card reads, "1890s. This is a brown and black silk-satin striped two piece dress trimmed in brown velvet, cream handmade lace and copper ribbon. The leg-o-mutton sleeves were the height of fashion. The dress is trimmed with jet beads made from obsidian...This was a walking or visiting dress that would have been worn by a middle class matron..."

A 1927 Sears Catalogue was included among the items. More fun can be found here.

It's my birthday and I am excited to share some of my favorite things with you. Fabric is up at the top of my list of favorites. But first, here is a brief recap of my birthday fun:

On Saturday we (Mr. IQ and I) went to Santa Ynez, CA to the Historical Museum which is currently featuring an antique quilt display (more on that in a later post), through the Santa Maria Valley and into Solvang, CA where we browsed in many shops and enjoyed the lovely afternoon.

To Start or To Finish?

Works in Progress & UnFinished Objects (WIPs & UFOs)

So, are you a finisher? I mean, do you work on a project at time from start to finish -- one project?

Me? No. I tend to flit from project to project. It's so tempting to begin something when inspired. It's nice to have several projects to choose from to work on. (1) I like a variety of color combinations and maybe I am in the mood to work with 30s fabrics one day and civil war fabrics the next. Not a problem, I have one of each going right now. (2) It's nice to have projects that require different techniques going at the same time. I like handwork and sew by machine as well. English paper piecing allows portability so I can sew even when away from home. I love that -- more sewing time is good. (3) There is also the option of having a project that is less complex; one I go to for 'mindless sewing'. Add items begun in classes but not yet completed.

Needlesstosay I have a lot of projects going on simultaneously in varying degrees of completeness. I am okay with that. Really!

Pat Sloan has issued a sort of call to action to "bust your UFOs". See her first post on it here. Do you know what you have? I think I do. I guess I need to check on that.

Sewing Along on Labor Day

It's Labor Day weekend! My plans include sewing for sure. So far I have worked a little on Carolina Christmas, a quilt designed by Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville and offered as a mystery quilt last November and December. I chose to use Bonnie's colors: greens, reds, background and tan rather than gold.

If you have not done a mystery, perhaps consider trying one with Bonnie. Have a look at her past mysteries (Carolina Crossroads, Double Delight) and you will find that they come out quite nicely. The bonus is they're meant to be sewn from scraps so for me it means creating a treasure from bits and pieces that I am not quite sure how I will use. I find that the great variety of fabrics makes for beautiful quilts. Hopefully you find some time to sew.

Hi, I'm thinking 24 strawberries.... I'd even like to win them.

I think they're cute too! So, Eleanor S, how about some extra bits of some leftover strawberry fabric so you can make some strawberries too? Traditionally, those little guys clung to a large tomato pincushion and were filled with emery shavings to smooth out nicks and burrs on needles and pins. I filled mine with sand (which is more readily available where I live) and I think it works just fine for the job.

To add weight, I also added sand in the large pincushion. Usually I begin with a piece of muslin and take a running stitch around the edges, fill with some sand and wrap it securely. Then I wrap the sand/muslin ball with cotton batting scraps, create the shape needed and use that to fill the pincushion.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone could win? I'd love it! Perhaps the next best thing: these patterns require small amounts of supplies, and you may very well have everything you need at your fingertips. A Few Scraps is hosting a quilt along

It seems many quilters focus on piecing the quilt top and perhaps rush through the quilting or let the tops languish for a spell while they finish more tops. Favorite Thing: Pincushions

Pincushions are one of my favorite things. There is just something about a little scrap of fabric becoming something so useful that appeals to me. I like ‘em big and heavy.

Big so they have a lot of space for all my pins and needles. I don't want to be fussing looking for a place to stick the pin, you know? Heavy so they don’t spin, roll or wiggle away when I am tryin’ to stick ‘em. Gotta have a pincushion that stays put.

That said, my current fave pincushion is this one.

It was designed by the talented Anna Maria Horner and worked up in sunflower colors. It’s six inches in diameter. That’s a lot of pincushion! There is even a little ladybug sittin’ on top.

In order to have a chance at a kit to make your own sunflower pincushion (even the ladybug!) just leave a comment including a guess about how many strawberries are in the jar pictured below.

McCall’s Quilting has some web bonuses available for the September/October issue.

In this issue there is also an article on copyright basics written by an attorney and quilter. It seems this is sometimes a topic debated with zeal and passion in groups and on blogs. The article is not available online based on my search, but is referred to here. I am working to gain a better understanding of copyright myself, so am following a few discussions on the topic...working to stay on the straight and narrow in regard to copyright. Plum Jam

I did it. I made plum jam. Wow, it's sweeeet; tasty, but a bit sweet to my taste. I would love to have a clear fruit flavor come through more. Ingredients: sugar, fresh organic plums, filtered water. Nice and simple. If you have not tasted handmade jam I highly recommend it. And if you have wanted to try making jam but have put it off, set some time aside and give it a go. Honestly, when I was pitting 2.5 pounds of plums I wondered what I had gotten myself into. But all in all, it's worth it. It takes a bit of time but such sweet rewards.

Jelly Roll Quilt Along Blocks

Since March I have been working on blocks for the Jelly Roll Quilt Along. I am grateful for each designer's work developing an original block for the quilt and I can't wait to assemble them. This quilt along has been a freeing process; each designer had no information about the work the others had done, as I understand it, it has been a bit of a mystery to everyone. Block eleven is shown here and was designed by Konda Luckau. The fabric is Moda's Aviary and the background is Robert Kaufman Kona Ivory.

Nature's Bounty

A week off. What's a person to do? I have never tried my hand at canning or making jam, and I have wanted to for a long while now. This week I will, hopefully, convert fresh plums into thick, crimson jam. I have read a lot. A few pounds of plums are in my possession. There is no time like the present. Wish me luck.

Hello, I’m Lisa. I live in California on the Central Coast and enjoy spending time outdoors when I am not working full time or sewing. I am married to Mr. Inspired Quilter (Mr. IQ) and we have two west highland white terriers (westies) who keep us busy.

I enjoy reading blogs (especially quilting blogs) and want to join in the fun. Here I will write about sewing and quilting projects in addition to a little of this and a little of that.

Antique and reproduction quilts are my favorites, however, I have a bit of a modern quilter streak and find Amish quilts lovely too. I guess I just love quilts in general.

What I like about other blogs: giveaways, pictures, sharing tips and tricks, and links to other blogs…so I’ll do that here too! I would like to start by sharing a few of my favorite things, so stay tuned for a giveaway right here.
