She is the winner of four pink fat quarters. I'll send them off to you as soon as we get an address.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Stay tuned for an update on the Road to California show. It was an experience I will never forget! Partly because I took 797 photos.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;">It was wonderful to be in the company of 20 lovely ladies all of whom are interested in quilt history. Each student in the class brought two to three items to study, and we surely did study them. In the class the students poured over 44 quilts in six hours. <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I can't wait for the next quilt study opportunity. </span>That alone was worth going to the show, but there are so many other reasons too! </span>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-33961756812782805332013-01-23T08:21:00.001-08:002013-06-17T19:19:55.754-07:00Civil War Quilts and Dixie Diary<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I head to Ontario, California for the <a href="http://www.road2ca.com/">Road to California Quilter's Conference and Showcase</a>. I am excited to be able to attend this annual show for the first time, finally! Of course, I am enrolled in so many workshops and lectures that I may not be able to even see all of the quilts in the show, but I will be sure to give it a go. The plan is to return home inspired and quite likely exhausted.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Before I head out the door I'd like to share my first <a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/2013/01/dixie-diary-1-her-flag-flying.html">Dixie Diary</a> block. I have not yet added the applique to this, not sure; I may let the stripe be the focal point here. Thoughts?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a monthly block, this is a more manageable pace for me (would love to have more free quilting time, but grateful to be employed and put first things first!). I am still working on the <a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/2011/01/1-catch-me-if-you-can.html">Civil War Blocks</a> of the week shared in 2011. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Eventually two quilts will be done, but for now I am enjoying the process.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh, I am so excited and grateful that my sister gave me Barbara Brackman's <em><a href="http://www.ctpub.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=2743">Civil War Sampler</a></em> for Christmas since some blocks featured on the blog were not included in the book and there are some additional blocks in the book that were not on the blog. There are 50 blocks in the book with historic tales and there are 53 blocks on the blog. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Oh yes, and be sure to <a href="http://inspiredquilter.blogspot.com/2013/01/giveaway.html">go here</a> and leave a comment if you would like a chance to win four cute pink FQs. What would you make with them?</span><br />

In searching for the 'right' fabric I made my way to three local quilt shops. First, the <a href="http://www.thecottonball.com/">Cotton Ball</a> and with loads of gorgeous batiks and traditional fabrics, alas, no Hello Kitty to be found. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Second I went to <a href="http://www.quiltshopsofthecentralcoast.com/BettysFabricsSlo">Betty's Fabrics</a>, a shop in the next town. Betty's is not a quilt shop but serves quilters in addition to carrying garment and upholstery/decorator fabrics. Well let me tell you I was not surprised to find Hello Kitty fabric there, but was tickled to find that the only one was <strong>KISS Hello Kitty</strong>! I had no idea!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgscmrlBjvBVSulbVuPXhLj0TdXrBLY_pTzFs-SDff7UGz7FBCA5ILj3hTARz4yyt3gpMtW13ofkjh-a04FiNJzBrzJQafiRy9zIg4QyUfP135u6iFlfQKsHIsQc12T9IyUEaSCNtQBkyY/s1600/Hello+Kitty+KISS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgscmrlBjvBVSulbVuPXhLj0TdXrBLY_pTzFs-SDff7UGz7FBCA5ILj3hTARz4yyt3gpMtW13ofkjh-a04FiNJzBrzJQafiRy9zIg4QyUfP135u6iFlfQKsHIsQc12T9IyUEaSCNtQBkyY/s200/Hello+Kitty+KISS.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Hmmm, cute but not exactly what I need for <em>this</em> project. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Third was <a href="http://www.beverlys.com/san-luis-obispo-store.html">Beverly's Fabrics</a> and I found a sweet ladybug-themed fabric that was 'just right'!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvNSIBspmBey3MjliGEdcrbFlM65GE7-TbTyHibE16neAE4G-ekcLGdbPget-N9n2mlceou7y5yqpTStxchgeEJBryuYqGJ61ogt_TSZ5xsGpM1eEP1ZY7DVuIEDwfkAOn3GJJQQJmCk/s1600/Hello+Kitty+Ladybug.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzvNSIBspmBey3MjliGEdcrbFlM65GE7-TbTyHibE16neAE4G-ekcLGdbPget-N9n2mlceou7y5yqpTStxchgeEJBryuYqGJ61ogt_TSZ5xsGpM1eEP1ZY7DVuIEDwfkAOn3GJJQQJmCk/s200/Hello+Kitty+Ladybug.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">The result was this bag. Of course I could not fathom giving only the bag so a Hello Kitty beanie baby was added (she's holding a cupcake, how cute is that?!)...and a pillow and blanket for the beanie baby too.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">There is a fat quarter of the ladybug Hello Kitty fabric remaining and three additional pink fat quarters were added! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">If you are interested in receiving them just leave a comment by February 1 about what you would make with them. Maybe something heart-themed for Valentine's Day? Add them to your current project? It could be anything! Winner will be selected February 2. Please make sure there is a way to get in touch with you in case you are the winner. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">I am excited to have the opportunity to go to <a href="http://www.road2ca.com/">Road to California</a> this week and will happily share photographs to the extent possible...so stay tuned for major eye candy coming here soon!</span>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-12962013606513324722013-01-12T21:44:00.001-08:002013-01-12T21:44:46.662-08:00Happy New Year<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well hello there! Happy 2013 to you. </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">Hopefully you enjoyed a little <em>you time</em> over the past several months. I have! </span><span style="font-family: Arial;">It has been a blur, really, and I finished some projects and began others and will fill you in on all of that soon.</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">First, though, it's good fun to take a look around at blocks of the month for 2013 since many of the designers offer free blocks for a limited time and you have to be quick if you prefer to get them free. Fortunately some are available for purchase afterward so if you miss a block or two they are available to you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Here are a few new BOMs:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><a href="http://quiltdoodledesigns.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html">2013 BOM</a> - Quilt Doodle Designs</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">These are continuing from 2012:</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial;"><a href="http://blog.morningglorydesigns.net/p/2012-bom.html">Vintage Sampler</a> - Reeze Hanson</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Additionally, <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/easy-street-mystery.html">Easy Street</a> by Bonnie K. Hunter is a great mystery quilt (mystery has been revealed!) and will be available for a limited time (through June 2013, I believe).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;">Stay tuned for a few surprises this year. It will be fun! I love giveaways and have designed a few things to share as well. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oh no! There are more civil war repro scraps than the box will hold. So, I took a break from cleaning and made scrappy botch handle (aka devil's claw) blocks. Mr. IQ likes this block, says it looks like a medieval <a href="http://www.armory.net/item.cfm/RecordId/2608-KE.htm">mace</a>. We will see how many turn up from these scraps. It takes about one chubby eighth (9x22 inches) of a light and a dark to make one 8.875 inch block, but if you have strips just find a similar chunk and include it instead. That is what I did with the block on the right.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">These are my two favorite pincushions (above). A milk glass parfait with a handmade cushion inserted and the sunflower with a ladybug button in the center. The parfait has loops that fit a seam ripper in - so convenient! The sunflower pincushion was designed by Anna Maria Horner, she calls it Wildflower Pincushion and it's available <a href="http://www.bhg.com/decorating/do-it-yourself/fabric-paper-projects/designer-anna-maria-horner/?page=8">here</a>.</span><br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The thread holder on the left was gifted to me by a kind friend. It had a terribly faded tomato pincushion on the top, which is now stashed in the drawer with other goodies that came with it. The one on the right I discovered in an antique shop with several thimbles which are my size. How cool is that? I have left them in the drawer, but if I need one, it's there for me. Each of these holders came with the wooden spools of thread that are on them too. </span></div>

Among the extensive displays was a friendship quilt from Bethel, Ohio dated 1854. A few of the blocks on the quilt are the whig rose pattern. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This morning I read of the pieced whig rose on Ms. Brackman's <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2012/06/show-off-piecing-whig-rose.html">Material Culture</a> blog, and I immediately went back to those pictures I took of that quilt to look more closely at the construction of the whig rose blocks.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinDrKgTkWN-iiMtflXFGR9cE5CyyMPqeal9SExY82QZudpR7dv01lA12a4PrkLJ3aHwC4V4zzZ8VAaLWaOq_XlQEqUBDvjBC2GmFMpG_t-3TRxLq3nxSI_0M__-7Z21-OPLv0dxzfPFQE/s1600/1854+Bethel+OH+Friendship+Quilt+Whig+Rose+Detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="476" pca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinDrKgTkWN-iiMtflXFGR9cE5CyyMPqeal9SExY82QZudpR7dv01lA12a4PrkLJ3aHwC4V4zzZ8VAaLWaOq_XlQEqUBDvjBC2GmFMpG_t-3TRxLq3nxSI_0M__-7Z21-OPLv0dxzfPFQE/s640/1854+Bethel+OH+Friendship+Quilt+Whig+Rose+Detail.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What do you think? Hard to tell from a photo that you cannot zoom. There is *nothing* like studying a quilt in person. I cannot see enough antique quilt exhibits! Anyway, a</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">fter inspecting the few photos I have, the three roses with dark centers seem to be pieced to me. In the rose on the upper left, I detected piecing seams in the center portion. In the other two I saw hints of them, but since it's quilted in a cross hatch pattern, it's hard to tell if I am seeing quilting lines or pieced seams. </span><br />

I'd love to post more often and I regret that it has been a while. <br />
<br />
Recently I finished a <a href="http://www.quiltsillustrated.com/shop/Quiltsillustrated-Patterns/p/ps008-Bow-Tucks-Tote-Pattern.htm">Bow Tucks</a> tote.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3qoxcbGSPgGQkYtftSy0h9yqdcG5ySNvFQZ2ezwSMDfTSVbvq1uGuhw4r2-NVQLMGuEpyXR0xmQsIpgX6QsM2T-Fdiv789137p-vgfJOU0YUcSxJInlwd-ufDqSvodq5PRkHe8Lm5UM8/s1600/May+2012+Boz+Maddy+and+Projects+023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" mea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3qoxcbGSPgGQkYtftSy0h9yqdcG5ySNvFQZ2ezwSMDfTSVbvq1uGuhw4r2-NVQLMGuEpyXR0xmQsIpgX6QsM2T-Fdiv789137p-vgfJOU0YUcSxJInlwd-ufDqSvodq5PRkHe8Lm5UM8/s320/May+2012+Boz+Maddy+and+Projects+023.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
And a small <a href="http://javajem.blogspot.com/2008/02/wristlet-tutorial.html">wristlet by JavaJem</a> for times I need to jet off with my phone, keys, some cash, ID and a card, and do not want to carry more than I must. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf4Bzpr6q-KGuCFCg2QYsGp9LYAOR1UhgC89hEvaDNj1Noa6xg8V-qstqVv4pKbyKxqxzvrPmTfaSQnHqXRHxoRPwBzqzIQLnYSS2xA-WFUCK6fpJvTpw4tYXtZnKI3Hq3rytgmxmygb8/s1600/May+2012+Boz+Maddy+and+Projects+019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" mea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf4Bzpr6q-KGuCFCg2QYsGp9LYAOR1UhgC89hEvaDNj1Noa6xg8V-qstqVv4pKbyKxqxzvrPmTfaSQnHqXRHxoRPwBzqzIQLnYSS2xA-WFUCK6fpJvTpw4tYXtZnKI3Hq3rytgmxmygb8/s320/May+2012+Boz+Maddy+and+Projects+019.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em><span style="font-size: x-small;">back of wristlet</span></em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Now I am thinking I need to make the Bow Tucks tote in the Alexander Henry safari fabric and the wristlet in the Beachy fabric. What do you think?! It could be a while, but I think I will do just that.<br />
<br />
Hope you are finding time to stitch and do what you love.<br />
<br />
Happy stitching,<br />

At work there is a courtyard full of lavender and these little birds vigorously pluck out seed with their beaks, making the lavender sway. I saw them every day last week, from about 7:30am to 9:30am they fed right outside our window.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">Last Saturday I headed to work (on my day off) to take a snapshot of them. With their beautiful bright yellow feathers and the gorgeous purple and green of the lavender bushes I thought it would be a great opportunity for some quilty inspiration. I waited three and a half hours for them, and they didn't show up that day. So, instead I took pictures of...<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">lots of lavender...<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726172196158341778" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCCflIFEqd2l4p0mLGbXMdQlw848dnuRDQ0QcxceshXoSdKFmOggKUsN90pXSRPdwqP-8mwQQUO9nf7mlGfaV0xWmRCbZa7qAauyFoWilL0gmHSN_kCLLVtYMSnuBGXPp-dvGBREXeNK4/s400/March+2012+Lavender+and+Goldfinches+022.jpg" /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">a bee...<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726174615117953586" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyQ_1DqjwkGZWn5WsrvZXL64v7g3NRltUK6V_TfUu5v5wLvq37bwblk47e_mOdwIwOcDuO8i0cSZFkla6kp4G83YI603CcR9OfklFKh_85vE1ipZuevt626qMFk48MkQLlvaNmuWM5OEE/s400/March+2012+Lavender+and+Goldfinches+033.jpg" /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">a hummingbird...<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726175612443391314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLHC2vYR0En_CNM0vvAyPvtC35bf0qFAWqw_rOgXHwu2_te-_88szCHmtw7j_ZltXGOoyzbiY-9DWAQGOVu8SsP0jmGvZdHToGft08daBftKROWzDL3r9lZuftWj33JwTrlCsqc6wI1Qc/s400/March+2012+Lavender+and+Goldfinches+049.jpg" /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">a butterfly...<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 402px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 424px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726174996095504674" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgm0V1Sbwgx9hPOeuJ_06DcD9sSQHJyraq3qezosBAD18v7_LbvlPLCtZkkGZD6eopR3v1sabAQkZOG-FdGlm8DnNHdEuDSesCM0L_8aVOHpQfMf52aiCeMggSi2RcJsOKt27kBUszuHec/s400/March+2012+Lavender+and+Goldfinches+048.jpg" /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">and then...<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">I brought the camera to work again during the week to finally get a picture of the little guys!<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5726177060906203922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjprSXdhovZtvs7YG12lBBh5t45tHoChHbvEQ_FapJaHug2BrC6T1fMCAqk2CbJABjJIEWVvNWGowiNWsLM_bFYR4vhdd30_LwqtlrsCQ0I4W-mN0vlQYH0jebNdc6JxVZAqHsPeQctXf8/s400/March+2012+Lavender+and+Goldfinches+074.jpg" /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">Happy Spring!<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">~~Lisa</span></div></div></div></div></div></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-26345942568518924252012-03-24T15:45:00.009-07:002012-03-24T19:54:33.053-07:00Winners of St. Patrick's Day Giveaway<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3WSrvumcy3tdVPgO6qQ5n6OcSQr6JU6saT5zYi7DI1wFdOVPvoWbAvYrnVF3lJuh5mHl1iquNc322RAQ3CVnnrfZqDN6vynnmI0w6Q4vNECcMhFOSxcFSKaxsaFNAl-F2uL15yX5jyo/s1600/ScenicView.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 265px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723601678716936002" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJ3WSrvumcy3tdVPgO6qQ5n6OcSQr6JU6saT5zYi7DI1wFdOVPvoWbAvYrnVF3lJuh5mHl1iquNc322RAQ3CVnnrfZqDN6vynnmI0w6Q4vNECcMhFOSxcFSKaxsaFNAl-F2uL15yX5jyo/s400/ScenicView.JPG" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">It has been lovely to read the comments on the ideal retreat. The technique shares its name with 'foundation paper piecing' but they're not the same process. There are variations with each technique, but generally, with English paper piecing the sewist employs handwork techniques and bastes scraps of fabric to paper/cardstock to stablize it, then whip stitches the components together. Examples of quilts created with this technique include grandmother's flower garden (hexagons), clamshell, jewel, and many other patterns including those with y-seams like <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2010/05/hexagons-and-susis-reproduction.html">six-pointed stars</a>.<br /><br /></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719595059128069378" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCRPlpIlmaOgfo74YchZ8tnaptflT9Od0V1oPJ1xSwKeYwdHNj6fGMJzWGzQrdVrDJRK_gmVvKmON-8B98YtTEci7fld8nOq3CkYLbAVgBjGYWoAxoM9gGO7e3yTMwz5SP4__T9Cmg5tE/s400/March+2012+Giveaway+002.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-size:85%;"><em>Stars of Savannah includes three shapes: diamond, hexagon (center of star)<br />and jewel (star points). This example is still basted to the paper cardstock foundations<br />and shows the orange basting thread which will be removed later.</em></span></span><br /></p><br /><br /><br /><p align="left"><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">With foundation paper piecing, the sewist uses a marked foundation of muslin or paper and stitches fabric to it for precision piecing oftentimes not otherwise possible. Paper foundations are removed, muslin foundations usually remain in the quilt. Examples of foundation paper pieced patters are mariner's compass and other intricate works with small pieces such as this <a href="http://www.equiltpatterns.com/quiltpattern.php?products_id=787">cardinal</a>. See <a href="http://www.caroldoak.com/free-quilt-patterns.php">Carol Doak's</a> website for additional examples.<br /><br /></p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719935118160415122" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXtdlhYH6UudF2S8A_SCVKxBk-_M9FOXQlpYXEUyA731p5hA5jbCYARKYa2SldCZE1uVI3SKh2MZx6yyb20YiONuUHi7yIyG6uC-rDSjJpXhcay30PO3Y3nEKWltZWROp8FhPmCPwQzg4/s400/March+2012+Giveaway2+004.jpg" border="0" /><br /><strong><span style="color:#3366ff;">You</span></strong> could win one of two gifts to celebrate the coming of Spring and to help you understand more about English paper piecing or foundation paper piecing. <strong><em>Foundation Pieced Nature Quilts Designer Edition</em></strong> teaches the basics of foundation paper piecing and includes 14 (gorgeous!) nature-inspired projects for all levels of experience.<br /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719595858635351234" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijPqHd0bj5fgXs5R-Q_hDyw5aVV5wpPHaIBLmsfDZ7b8x6KvaslJie9tDtOkO5Vz_YB6TjjF9j5cSzybrwMJ9VdowgahyphenhypheneTI0ean5WEznTpbVESEkyllZ2Oxs-ce6J0GwEvy_QbgeDxhM/s400/March+2012+Giveaway+009.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Hummingbird Heaven pattern is in the book<br />Foundation Pieced Nature Quilts Designer Edition<br /><br /><br /></p></span></em><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5719929890824980290" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 300px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDCL3BKkJ-404VeZHt_hc0mlMC7eb0aXyGDabDatjG_ql3lit4GaeWmh1cyPdz29lUuOMadubtYFWtSWVXk-z6KO4nVa5Fc8DbFIJYxARifLInhkrlJOFH7j_8liYyFNmxUoTuSqKix5A/s400/March+2012+Giveaway2+005.jpg" border="0" /><br /><br /><br /><p align="center"><em><span style="font-size:85%;">Garden Variety is an English Paper Pieced pattern, along with a<br />Spring-green needle book. I had not ever served before, and I don't mind doing my civic duty. It does make for full days, though, since in addition to working in the mornings I am also taking an advanced patchwork class Tuesday evenings.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">Last week in class we discussed traditional scrap quilts and one patch designs: for example, the tumbler, the hexagon and the applecore. It was great to make the time to focus on patchwork and sleep can just wait, right? A bonus is now I have "homework" for class next Tuesday and am enjoying that excuse to be in the sewing loft more than usual..what a lovely mess, huh? All of my early reproduction fabrics are being neatly trimmed into tumbler shapes using a plexiglass template and a rotary cutter, and the stacks are getting taller in short order. It'll probably be a top before St. Valentine's Day and I can't wait to see a sampling of my mid to late 1800's fabrics in one top!<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">Fabulous Free Finds:<br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;">♦ In my last post I failed to link to </span><span style="font-family:arial;"><a href="http://tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com/2009/01/my-heart-is-filled-with-joy.html">Be Still My Heart</a>, a </span><span style="font-family:arial;">lovely block which is so versatile for February. If you don't have a lot of reds just throw in pink and burgundy along side them (the reds matching then becomes less conspicuous for those who like a more homogeneous color scheme) or even go completely scrappy. It will all look good...but then again, I love super scrappy! It's a great pattern for a honeybun, though measurements will need to be adjusted if you go that route. I can see this block with a thin background border and then alternating with a checkerboard block. That would be a great project for a honeybun. If you have honeybuns laying around, be sure to look <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/search/label/Honey%20Bun">here</a> for ideas...there are several honeybun recipes!<br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">♦ Ms. Brackman's <a href="http://barbarabrackman.blogspot.com/2012/01/checkered-past-free-pattern.html">Checkered Past</a> is a free pattern - simply lovely. With precuts it will make up quickly. Have you seen the new <a href="http://www.unitednotions.com/fcc_1862_battle_hymn.pdf">1862 Battle Hymn</a> line? I just adore the cotton boll print in that line (and the tiny florals, and the wavy stripes, and...). I am on the lookout for these fabrics in my local quilt shop. Maybe I will see you there!<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">~~Lisa</span>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-47356224613042451012012-01-14T09:16:00.000-08:002012-01-14T10:19:39.383-08:00Are You Ready for Valentine's Day?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDaxxHdVdb-rlKQfqUNrgSAhuvXfcJ0jTHsXIGIowy3ZfIJ7m63P6mgm-eL7soCzmxIt3ow3jR4Z0E198VkkxFv4p012PyHf0jICCMD9TUJOgGsOWLfukVRYcHJ9kGnPcQn8DtpmCsfz4/s1600/valentine+vintage+cupid.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 299px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5697553745960926274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDaxxHdVdb-rlKQfqUNrgSAhuvXfcJ0jTHsXIGIowy3ZfIJ7m63P6mgm-eL7soCzmxIt3ow3jR4Z0E198VkkxFv4p012PyHf0jICCMD9TUJOgGsOWLfukVRYcHJ9kGnPcQn8DtpmCsfz4/s400/valentine+vintage+cupid.JPG" /></a><br /><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;">Valentine's Day is nearing, so it's time to store the wreath/pine tree/green and red quilts and bring out the red and white classics, the pink and white quilts, or the heart quilts. What? Not a single quilt for the occasion? Me neither. Mine will be a red and white <a href="http://quilting.about.com/od/blockofthemonth/ss/double_nine.htm">double nine patch</a>. It could have hearts appliqued in the open spaces, but I think I will opt to showcase quilting in the open spaces instead.<br />Just in time for St. Valentines Day on February 14, here are a few quick, heart-themed projects:<br /><br /><a href="http://content.janome.com/index.cfm/ProjectCenter/Project_Detail/Keep_the_Heart_Truth_Growing_Wallhanging">Keep the Heart Truth Growing</a> (embroidery - builds awareness for the <strong><a href="http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/educational/hearttruth/">Heart Truth</a></strong> campaign)</span><span style="font-family:arial;"><a href="http://www.favequilts.com/Valentines/Valentines-Day-Table-Topper/ct/1#">Valentine's Day Table Topper</a> (with a gorgeous scalloped edge)<br /><a href="http://www.favequilts.com/Valentines/Heart-of-My-Heart-Valentine-Quilt-from-Accuquilt/ct/1">Heart of my Heart Valentine Quilt</a> (this will make a great February wallhanging)<br /><a href="http://kimsbigquiltingadventure.blogspot.com/2011/01/welcome.html">Heart Struck Runner</a> (dress up your counter top or table with this cute runner)<br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://www.fatcatpatterns.com/Miscellany%20Designs.html">Cross My Heart</a> (lovely heart theme)<br /><a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/01/hearts-galore.html">Hearts Galore</a> (uses precuts to make quick work of it)<br /><br />♥BONUS: These are great scrap-users:<br /><a href="http://www.mccallsquilting.com/patterns/details.html?idx=368">Scrappy Sweethearts</a> (nice wallhanging)<br /><a href="http://carterquilter.wordpress.com/2011/01/28/scrappy-four-patch-heart-quilt/">Scrappy Four Patch Heart Quilt</a> (sweet quilt with many different sizes)<br /><a href="http://carterquilter.wordpress.com/category/scrap-happy-heart-quilt/">Scrap Happy Heart Quilt</a> (great pattern for Valentine's Day and all year long)<br /><a href="http://carterquilter.wordpress.com/category/scrappy-heart-quilt/">Scrappy Heart Quilt</a> (love this, simple and effective)<br /><a href="http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/heart_quilt.htm">Heart Quilt</a> (this is as easy as it gets, add sashing or let them run together!)<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">Happy stitching!<br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">~~Lisa</span></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-1314490394282618372012-01-09T17:52:00.001-08:002012-01-13T21:41:40.683-08:00What's New in 2012?<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsy3QbDA473IQNBesjZhkqj4Jmf55Y4dCz-Vnpc3rnFFMzp-UNQzJNd8A18SGiVoil5Mw8VRD4ru9IdxqrvVf3NNJu_oy0gMvYbyXgV0Sk_M8cSTjJV_G4b0Wv2NiMs1sZ3V42YgsZSo8/s1600/icicles.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 325px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 325px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695870646865784978" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsy3QbDA473IQNBesjZhkqj4Jmf55Y4dCz-Vnpc3rnFFMzp-UNQzJNd8A18SGiVoil5Mw8VRD4ru9IdxqrvVf3NNJu_oy0gMvYbyXgV0Sk_M8cSTjJV_G4b0Wv2NiMs1sZ3V42YgsZSo8/s400/icicles.JPG" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">Hopefully 2012 is off to a great start for you! It is for me (aside from a doozie of a cold), but it is difficult to say goodbye to some quilty fun I had in 2011. Firstly, Barbara Brackman's Saturday morning posts including history and blocks for her <a href="http://civilwarquilts.blogspot.com/">Civil War Commemorative Quilt </a>(available through June 2012). Nancy Rink offered <a href="http://www.nancyrinkdesigns.com/free/ode-to-the-blue-and-grey/bom-instructions.html">Ode to the Blue and Grey</a>. I love the <a href="http://sentimentalstitches.net/free-stuff/polka-dot-garden/beyond-the-cherry-trees-album-quilt/">Beyond the Cherry Trees Album Quilt</a> offered by Sentimental Stitches, Clutch is a smart little dog to have claimed that quilt for his own. With a name like <a href="http://bunnyhillblog.com/2011/01/05/whos-that-squirrel-its-henrietta-whiskers/">Henrietta Whiskers</a>, how can you resist? Of course, the tail end of 2011 held the unveiling of eight steps on each Friday morning when Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville posted clues to her latest mystery quilt, <em>(spoiler alert!)</em> <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/01/mystery-monday-link-up-part-7-8.html">Orca Bay</a> <em>(<-- click the link to see the 'solution').</em> Bonnie's <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2012/01/cheddar-bow-tie-link-up-and-prize-give.html">Cheddar Bow Ties</a> will have to carry us through to the next mystery quilt.<br /><br />In San Luis Obispo County there is legislation pending (it will be considered this week!) to ban single-use bags in stores (if it's passed, no more "paper or plastic?"). Consequently I have spent quite a bit of time lately whipping up totes. Of course, I had intended to make them up months ago, but quilts and other fun things came to the forefront. Not anymore! Now I have a collection of totes waiting by the door to carry whatever I need. I even made smaller bags lined with <a href="http://www.warmcompany.com/ibpage.html">Insul~Bright</a> for frozen/cold items.<br /><br />It's still early in the year and so many new blocks of the month have surfaced already. Here are a few I will keep my eye on (in alphabetical order). These are each generously offered by the designer for no fee (some for a limited time, for example free for thirty days, then for a fee).<br /></span><span style="font-family:arial;"><a href="http://countryjunktion.com/2012BOM.html">A Year of Mini Quilts</a> by Amy Heaton of Country Junk'tion<br /></span><a href="http://ajpadilla.com/bom/asian-teapots"><span style="font-family:arial;">Asian Teapots</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> by Angie Padilla of Angie's Bits and Pieces<br /></span><a href="http://www.shabbyfabrics.com/Country-Cottages-Mystery-BOM-Block-of-the-Month-Program-P12993.aspx"><span style="font-family:arial;">Country Cottages</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> by Shabby Fabrics<br /><a href="http://justtakes2.com/">Just Takes 2</a> by Brenda of Dear Jane and Gayle of Sentimental Stitches<br /></span><a href="http://www.debbiemumm.com/Projects/"><span style="font-family:arial;">Mumm's the Word</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> Anniversary Sampler by Debbie Mumm<br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;"><a href="http://thisandthatpatterns.typepad.com/thisandthatpatterns/2012/01/mystery-mondaysbeginning-again.html">Mystery Mondays</a> with This and That Patterns<br /><a href="http://www.kimscraftyapple.blogspot.com/">Project Quilting</a> Season 3 began yesterday at Kim's Crafty Apple<br /></span><a href="http://www.bunnyhilldesigns.com/dynamic/?page=Free"><span style="font-family:arial;">Scrappy Plate Club</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> by Bunny Hill Designs<br /></span><a href="http://www.katlovesquilts.blogspot.com/p/2012-bom.html"><span style="font-family:arial;">Vintage Sampler</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;"> by Reeze Hanson of Morning Glory Designs (42 garden-inspired blocks!)<br />With all of that good fun, <strong>2012 promises to be a good year for quilting</strong>!<br /><br />Fabulous Favorite Freebies:<br />*Always on the lookout for great quilt patterns for large scale fabrics and found <a href="http://www.hoffmanfabrics.com/EDocs/Site10/Royal%20Peacocks%20pattern%20in%20antique.pdf">Royal Peacocks</a> by Punch Studio. One WORTH the piecing!".</em> So, a little tune-up to my sewing machine and space are in order before I sew this mystery. <br />Happy stitching!<br />~~Lisa</span></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-63496445725075120952011-10-31T06:12:00.000-07:002011-10-31T19:05:53.548-07:00Happy Haunting!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicVw3IrdCyvPPjd983M210NTypJIUZhPJ58NSPfcUzRLHKoY0CF1rhIAo1w_1QVk_unRKFFocXqJJRbDvryyNezXtE1gk7Ge9ddchB7xs_T9PZ9dr0Jp9SaKsOLhDFdSMmmdGPCtBGpU/s1600/halloween+jackolanterns.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 266px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669644721543927314" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiicVw3IrdCyvPPjd983M210NTypJIUZhPJ58NSPfcUzRLHKoY0CF1rhIAo1w_1QVk_unRKFFocXqJJRbDvryyNezXtE1gk7Ge9ddchB7xs_T9PZ9dr0Jp9SaKsOLhDFdSMmmdGPCtBGpU/s400/halloween+jackolanterns.JPG" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">My favorite Halloween costume ever was made by my artistic aunt. When I was 10 years old I went trick-or-treating as a Band-Aid box. It was a great costume: warm and gave people a laugh. Just keep in mind the little one wearing it needs space to walk, so a cut-out in back of the legs from the knees down would be good. I still remember the feeling of my legs hitting the back of the costume trying to keep up with my cousins...ouch, my aching neck! It was worth it, though, that delightful costume made for a great time.<br /><br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">Favorite of the day: is a sweet applique Halloween themed wall hanging by <a href="http://uppercanadaquiltworks.com/fairfieldroaddesigns/index.html">Fairfield Road Designs</a></span><span style="font-family:Arial;"><br />Wishing you a frightfully Happy Halloween!<br /></span><br /><br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">~~Lisa</span></div>Lisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01381762488974482616noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7517927228302178846.post-19725575106471534072011-10-25T18:16:00.000-07:002011-10-25T19:24:30.064-07:00October is in Full Swing...<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglPlDHf-gjTwra0WKogyLcEc5zCm8r4V9ywJu0Ry_p-7bYbhQhfLUzD5LYgTsPtkMMOkSPkP6dvS9pN5TBZgsCp-QnEIsNbOq3niD97YaEKY3qOP12phI11nyJfXWTcfK66FM6gmQZhHc/s1600/Lisa%2527s+Birthday+Weekend+2010+115.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5667620010365453746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglPlDHf-gjTwra0WKogyLcEc5zCm8r4V9ywJu0Ry_p-7bYbhQhfLUzD5LYgTsPtkMMOkSPkP6dvS9pN5TBZgsCp-QnEIsNbOq3niD97YaEKY3qOP12phI11nyJfXWTcfK66FM6gmQZhHc/s400/Lisa%2527s+Birthday+Weekend+2010+115.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;">I love all things Fall: grapes, apples, leaves, pumpkins, and a little warm beverage. A sample of past Bonnie mysteries are available </span><a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/p/mystery-quilts.html"><span style="font-family:arial;">here</span></a><span style="font-family:arial;">. I believe the fabric requirements will be posted on her <a href="http://quiltville.blogspot.com/">Quiltville</a> blog on November 1 and the first clue will be posted on November 18. If you're not sure what to do with all of your scraps ~ this is a great way to put them to use! Warning: Bonnie makes large quilts (typically about queen-sized or larger). If desired, make one-half the number of units called for and fill in where needed once the end result is more clear. That way you will have a smaller quilt and still participate in the mystery. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;">My favorite free patterns are:<br /></span><span style="font-family:Arial;">*<a href="http://www.ttfabrics.com/patterns/">Timeless Treasures</a> features Christmas Memories - this would be great with your favorite redwork or with the convenience panel as shown. Meawhile, I visited the <a href="http://mennonitequiltcenter.com/">Mennonite Quilt Center</a> in Reedley, California. I had not been before and was not sure what to expect. There was no agenda, I had nothing in mind except the time on my hands ought to be spent well. Imagine my delight when I walked in and was greeted by Mary, the manager, and she graciously permitted me to take photos and then invited me to see a quilt show by their featured artist, Pat Robertson. "We have go upstairs", she said, "let me know when you're ready." </span></div>
<br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;">About thirty minutes later I said I was ready but nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. Three ladies and I exited the comfortable air-conditioned shop and made the arduous climb up the staircase. When we entered the room we were awestruck and were literally speechless. Then I said, "wow". That was all that came out. There were no words, just the taking in of the sheer volume of space which showcased the quilts coupled with the delectable quilts we saw. Gorgeous. Striking. Spectacular. </span></div>
<br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:Arial;">There is something of a little miracle in that moment when you're taking in all of the colors, shapes, the minute stitches, the negative space, all the beauty of another artist's work. I began to look at each one. Which one pulls you in first? Do you remember? Is it the one you're closest to or do you move across the room to take in the quilt so spectacular it pushes its way to first in line? These were all lovely. She used applique, paper piecing, machine piecing and perhaps some hand piecing as well. Some of the quilts were machine quilted, others all by hand and still others used both methods. There was one which resembles a persian rug, a study in reds, a spiky one, dresden plate with a petal askew called <em>He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not</em>, gorgeous appliqued flowers and vines amid pieced patchwork and actual woven baskets, and more. Our friendly guide announced that Pat does all of the steps in making the quilts herself, she works outside the home in addition to teaching at the center and creating all of this beauty. Wow, I am still captivated. </span></div>
<br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:Arial;">The Quilt Center features an artist every year following the quilt auction, when they have no auction quilts to display. Each April the Mennonite Quilt Center holds a quilt auction at <a href="http://www.fresno.edu/">Fresno Pacific University</a> in Fresno, California. This year it was held April 1 and 2. The quilts sold are still listed <a href="http://home.comcast.net/~bryancoleman/West_Coast_Sale/Quilt.html">here</a> for your viewing. The auction is a benefit for the Mennonite Central Committee. More information is available <a href="http://westcoastmccsale.org/">at this site</a>. </span></div>
<br /><div align="left"><span style="font-family:arial;">If you can get to Reedley, California make the trip if only to see the Mennonite Quilt Center. I was pleased to meet the many volunteers who work there and a few kind ladies, including Debbie, who began quilting in January and said she didn't remember to bring her phone to take photos. Of course I offered to provide a link to the photo slideshow as I usually take quite a few pictures when I bring the camera along. Reedley even has a 'quilt walk'. Traditional blocks are featured in mosaic tiles in front of several downtown businesses, including the Mennonite Quilt Center. I stopped to photograph a few of them, but in the 111 degree fahrenheit heat I decided to pack up the camera after the two block stroll, leaving about half of them for my next visit.</span></div>

Clearly the key is the marks stay when you want them to (for example signatures and quilt labels) and it disappears when it's supposed to, generally when marking quilting lines. There has been buzz in quilt blogs and chat groups about Pilot FriXion(R) pens, and whether they 'really' disappear. It seems they disappear when pressed (heat over 140 degrees) and sometimes re-appear when temperatures drop (put your work in the freezer and the marks come back). Though I read in one case where the quilt had been washed before being in the freezer and the marks did not reappear. Have you tried this pen yet? What is your opinon? Would you use a FriXion pen on an heirloom quilt? A utility quilt? </span>
<br />
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">Recently I marked a piece of muslin with Crayola(R)</span><span style="font-family:Arial;"> washable pens and another with Crayola washable crayon. These are my 'disappearing' markers of choice. </span>
<br /></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">Hypothesis:</span></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">I have used Crayola washable crayons with great success for several years, so I fully expected both the markers and the crayons would come out after one wash.</span></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">The experiment:</span></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">On two pieces of muslin, I wrote the names of the colors with a regular black Sharpie(R) fine point permanent pen (the one that says 'Not for letter writing or cloth'). This would test whether the Sharpie bled and how well it held up in the wash. Secondly, I labeled the top with IDenti(R)-pen ('Crayons' and 'Pens') to compare it with the Sharpie. Next to the name of the pen or crayon I crosshatched marks and then drew a line out to the right. They were washed in a frontloading washer in cold water, gentle cycle with mild detergent. I did not put them in the dryer and no prewash/spot treatment was used. </span></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">NOTE: On the box of Crayola washable pens it states: <em>For Best Results: Crayola Washable Markers wash from skin and most washable children's clothing. Wash promptly in hot wash cycle. Do not use prewash or chlorine bleach. Repeat laundering may be required.</em></span></div></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;">Considerations:
<br /></div></span>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="font-family:arial;">As noted above, I used cold water and the company suggests hot for best results. Additionally, in the hopes of recreating a true quilting scenario where marks may remain for several weeks before washing, I waited</span> three days before laundering thereby not following the suggested guideline 'wash promptly' for best results. Finally, I washed only once and it states repeat laundering may be required.</span>
<br /></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">Results:</span></div>
<br />
<br /><div><span style="font-family:Arial;">As you can see in the photo below, the pens washed out quite well. Even held up against the light there is no trace of color in any of the eight areas where washable marker was crosshatched the line area. Alternately, in the washable crayon areas all held traces of crayon. This was quite surprising as I have used the washable crayons reliably (without testing first though of course that is recommended) and they have come out without fail from four quilts washed as in the experiment (front loading washer, cold, mild detergent, gentle cycle). </span></div>

<br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Recently I finished the Three Bean Salad quilt and used purple Crayola washable crayon* to mark the quilting lines. It washed out! <em>*Please test first and use at your own risk!</em></span></div>
<br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643351971521199922" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNdlF6n6oO0ZkvxDFCCbhS239LeVNtI3iRXONSO9TpZfkyh9qiu1yNu-NCRS4PJLjpTt-tnq1bd7k-36DHatsXOg_phN4HeZfFHUxN1hb1xTe9yGJQxt8POijYTGfyw27fi4T1KNpt0iM/s400/CRAYOLA+WASHABLE+008.jpg" /><span style="font-family:arial;">Conclusion: I will continue to use Crayola washable crayons and markers for marking. They are readily available, price is good -- around here they cost less than $2 per box during back to school and ohh the variety of colors with 8 marking pens and 24 crayons! On lighter fabrics I will use the washable pen or painters tape for straight line quilting.</span><span style="font-family:arial;"></span>
